This award is intended to recognize excellence in public education about zoology.

Award

The award comprises a $300 cash prize and a scroll. If the recipient is not already a member of the Canadian Society of Zoologists, a 1-year free membership will be awarded by the Society.

Frequency of Availability

Maximum of one per year. The award need not be made every year.

Application/Nomination Procedures

Nominations/Applications are to be sent to the Chair of the Recognition Committee (the Past-President). Nominations may be made by any CSZ member and should include the rationale for such nomination. Any CSZ member may apply for the award, and should include a cover letter outlining their rationale for application.

Candidate packages for evaluation should clearly explain how the applicant meets one or more of the following:

  1. The quality and significance of the individual’s or team of individuals’ contributions to dissemination of science.

  2. The primary audience of the activities should be the lay public.

  3. The activities carried out may be relevant to any aspect of zoological science.

  4. The reach of the activities in terms of the size and diversity of the audience and the likelihood of reaching an audience that might not otherwise be exposed to Zoology.

  5. The impact of the activities on the public.

  6. Future outcomes of the educational activities beyond the immediate.

  7. The committee will favour a sustained body of work over a single achievement.

  • 2016 – Dr. Carin Bondar, in recognition of her “Wild Sex” series and online/social media presence.
